Welcome to CaddyBytes.com's tournament page for the 2008 Stanford St. Jude Championship golf tournament.  Memphis Tennessee has hosted a professional golf tournament twice in 1945 -6 and then from 1958 to the present day.

In 1970 Danny Thomas created a sponsorship with the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and under his tutelage and association that great charitable Memphis institution continues today to be the primary affiliated recipient of this annual PGA Tour event.

In 1984 Memphis based Federal Express picked up the tournament sponsorship.  Here in 2008 Stanford is the new sponsor with Memphis based FedEx now hosting the FedExCup points system and tournament in September in Chicago.  This year the tournament preceeds the U.S. Open and boasts a fairly strong field as well.

There have been some great champions in Danny Thomas Memphis Open and St. Jude Championship past including Billy Maxwell, Dr. Cary Middlecoff, Tommy Bolt, Jack Nicklaus, Lee Trevino, Nick Price, and four time winner Dave Hill to name a notable few.  Al Geiberber won in 1977 shooting the first 59 in professional tournament golf competition on his way to victory there at Colonial Country Club with renowned tour caddy Lee Lynch on the bag.

The TPC at Southwind has been the host course since 1989 and went through some major revamping two years ago with a complete changeover from bent to champion bermuda grass on all the putting surfaces.

Woody Austin is the defending champion here in 2008.
