Welcome to CaddyBytes.com’s tournament's page for the 2012 Hyundai Tournament of Champions, (formerly SBS, and Mercedes-Benz), Championship golf tournament.  The PGA Tour season kicks off the 2012 FedEx Cup season with the Hyundai Tournament of Champions, -a compilation of previous year's tournament winners on the PGA Tour.  

This is the 15th consecutive season that the Kapalua Resort's  Plantation course on the island of Maui plays host to the Hyundai Tournament of Champions. This is a small field 'specialty' event - you might even call it the last 'silly season' event of 2011 - played at the start of the 2012 season.

Only 28 players get to compete - all PGA Tour winners from the 2011 season with no cut and a high paying last place check for whomever finishes 28th.  For the first time this tournament will begin on Friday and end on Monday I suppose a move by the Golf Channel and PGA Tour to get more people to watch instead of a Sunday finish up against the NFL Playoffs.  

None of high world ranking except for Steve Stricker nor any real PGA Tour stars except for a couple young guns like Keegan Bradley are playing here this year.  But that's not enough to stir up enough fan interest to even watch this event - now shown only on the Golf Channel - in recent year's - and this one will be no different.  

Combine that fact with limited national television coverage until San Diego's event a month from now and this tournament falls low in the Neilson ratings.  In the 'old days; - pre crash, pre golf channel, - folks used to watch the Hawaii tournaments back east and north in the big cities of North America via national coverage by the big networks while folks had to look outside at the snow and wait until Spring to get play golf again.

They'd watch just to see live pictures and coverage from Hawaii - now that's only available to a shrinking tournament golf fan interest group and no longer the general populace - especially if they don't have the Golf Channel at home.

The previous longest hosting of this tournament was when the tournament and former Tournament of Champions was annually played at the La Costa Resort in Carlsbad California.

There have been some great champions in Hyundai Champions, SBS, Mercedes, and Tournament of Champions past a long and storied list that includes Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, Sam Snead, Lee Trevino, Gary Player, Gene Littler and many more.  Geoff Ogilvy won back to back Tournament of Champions events in both 2009 and 2010 with Jonathan Bird defending here in 2012.
