Welcome
to CaddyBytes.com’s Tournament's page for
the 2012 Regions Tradition at Shoal Creek golf tournament - formerly
knows as the 'The Tradition' golf tournament.
The Regions Tradition golf tournament is in it's 21st anniversary as a former
Senior now Champions Tour major championship. This is the final Senior
Major professional golf tournament of the year. (The three other Champions
Tour major championships are the Senior U.S. and British Opens, and Senior PGA
Championship).
The Tradition began in 1989 by founder and real estate developer Lyle
Anderson. The Jack Nicklaus designed Golf Club at Desert Mountain - a Lyle
Anderson property - hosted the tournament from it's inception in 1989 until 2002
as the weather was unpredictable in the spring at that elevation at Desert
Mountain (just north of Phoenix) with the tournament being played every year in
the first week of April before The Masters. (Jack Nicklaus won at his
first two appearances in 1990 and 91 and used it for a 'tune up' to Augusta back
then.)
The Tradition then moved to another Anderson property - to nearby Superstition
Mountain just north of Phoenix for 2002 and '03' seasons until it moved to The
Reserve Vineyards near Portland and arrived at this venue beginning in 2007 at
The Crosswater golf club in Bend Oregon and now being played in the Spring at
Shoal Creek in Alabama.
There have been some great champions in 19 years of The Tradition a list
that includes Jack Nicklaus (four times), Lee Trevino, Ray Floyd, Gil Morgan
(twice), Don Bies, Graham Marsh, Jim Thorpe, Doug Tewell, Craig Stadler, Loren
Roberts, Edwardo Romero, Tom Shaw, Tom Kite, Tom Watson, Mark McNulty, Mike Reid
won it in 2010 with Fred Funk defending here at Shoal Creek in 2011.
