the 2012 Farmers Insurance of San Diego Open golf tournament (and more
recently the Buick
Invitational). Originally known simply as the San Diego Open - has had many corporate sponsors since it's inception in 1952 and
was also
associated with a celebrity host in it's storied past - that was then called the
Andy Williams San Diego Open.
There have been some great champions over the years who've won the San Diego
Open like Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Tommy Bolt, and
more recently Davis Love, Phil Mickelson, and John Daly.
Here in 2012 this will be the first full field (non pro-am) event for the PGA
Tour on the U.S. Mainland. (After two in Hawaii and one pro am the previous week
- Humana Challenge.
Tiger Woods won't be playing at Torrey Pines this year as he has committed to
play at the HSBC Championship the very same week in Abu Dhabi - (can you say big
appearance fee? - against the rules for PGA Tour events - not so on other
tours). Tiger's domination at this event winning here 7 times not
including his junior amateur career is unparalleled. Last year he played
awful and was his debut to a checkered season with much change ending with the
win at his own Chevron Challenge in early December 2011 with new caddy Joe
LaCava on the bag.
This should still be a good tournament though with a decent field with Bubba
Watson defending here and the first tourney of the year by an national - non
cable - television network - i.e. more viewers. Stay tuned to CaddyBytes for the
