Welcome to CaddyBytes.com’s Tournament's page for the 2011 Viking Classic golf tournament.  Previously known as The Southern Farm Bureau Classic for years now evolved into being The Viking Classic  and now moved from a second to last in the lineup on the PGA Tour's Fall Series Schedule of golf tournament events - to beginning here in 2011 as an official event opposite the British Open Championship.  

The Viking Classic has evolved over the years, first as the Deposit Guarantee, then the Southern Farm Bureau, and now The Viking Classic.  This tournament had it's roots to the professional golf circuit through the Deep Mid South region's old Magnolia Golf Classic golf tournament that was played in the 1970's and '80's opposite the Masters tournament every spring in April and held in Hattiesburg, MS.  

Since 1994 the tournament has been played in north suburban Jackson Mississippi with the Annandale Golf Club as the host golf tournament course.  Jack Nicklaus designed the Annandale golf club course in 1980.

Last year this tournament was washed out by heavy rains.  This tournament is losing it's sponsor after this year's 2010 event and may signal a possible demise as have several smaller market PGA Tour events with Milwaukee going out after this year.  And that would be an end of a storied history this tournament and it's ancestors played in PGA Tour history.

The good news is the tournament is still alive and called the Viking Classic played opposite this year's British Open at Sandwich.  Bill Haas is the defending champion but he will be trying to win the British Open this week at Royal St. Georges.

There have been some notable past champions of the Deposit Guarantee, Southern Farm Bureau, now Viking Classic including Fred Funk, Billy Ray Brown, Ed Dougherty, John Huston, and in more recent years Luke Donald, D.J. Trahan, and Chad Campbell, with Will Mackenzie defending here after winning in 2008 and the washout of 2009, with Bill Haas winning it in 2010.
