Welcome
to Caddybytes.com’s 'Caddy 'Bits' providing current Bits and Bytes of
updated News from the PGA Tour and from 'Inside the Ropes' of professional
golf:
Nov. 3, 2005: More Sad Caddy O'Bits:
In addition to the recent passing of Angelo Argea (Jack Nicklaus), the world of professional golf has lost another caddy in the latter weeks of
Oct., 2005 with the passing of veteran caddy Jack Keating.
Affectionately named 'Six Pack', Jack was the winning caddy on the bag
for Bruce Fleisher's breakthrough PGA Tour win at the 1991 Bank of Boston
Classic. A veteran of the military and the tour Jack, spent a good
part of the 1990's bouncing around between the PGA, Hogan, Nike, Senior, and
LPGA Tours. He was working as a locker room attendant at a golf club in
northern N.J. when he was killed in an automobile accident on the New Jersey
turnpike. Like a lot of tour caddies Jack was an unconventional person with a
love for the game of golf who was the brunt of a lot of caddy ribbing over the
years particularly with regard to his nickname. Jack was a good man - he will be sorely
missed by all.
In the past year we lost Ralph Coffey
in the Spring of 2004 (wins with Deane Beman, Bert Yancey, Lanny Wadkins, George
Burns), Herman Mitchell in late Nov. of 2004 (Lee Trevino, Gardner
Dickinson), and Eddie Terrell (Raymond Floyd among others).
Harry Caddell (Harry 'C'), a veteran caddy of 20 plus years on tour -a truly unique character
with a love for the game and a knack for finding classic golf clubs around the
second hand shops. Harry would often sell or give them to Fred
Couples or Tom Lehman who'd then have success with that putter,
driver, or wedge Harry gave them. Often he'd come up with a tip or an
insight that would help a player in some aspect of his game. Tom Lehman
would often listen to Harry - eccentric as hell as he was because he had such a
big and knowledgeable golfing heart. Veteran tour player Lenny
Clements over saw and took care of Harry's affairs - getting him into a
health care system in California where, sadly, he lost his battle to prostate
cancer in the Spring of 2004.
