to CaddyBytes.com’s Tournament's page for
the 2010 Pebble Beach National Pro Am golf tournament. Originally
known as the Bing Crosby National Pro Am since it's inception in 1937 when the
first event was held at Rancho Santa Fe California and won by Sam
Snead.
The tournament resumed after WWII in 1947 and moved to a venue to be played on
the Monterey Peninsula along the Cypress Pt. Golf Club, Monterey Peninsula C.C.,
and Pebble Beach golf links golf courses. Since then, Spyglass Hill made
the rotation replacing Monterey Peninsula C.C. in 1967 with Poppy Hills
eventually replacing Cypress Pt. in 1991.
The previously large pro am playing
field 180 professionals playing in foursomes comprised of two pro's
and two amateurs over three golf courses has been reduced beginning here in
2010. The new field will be limited to 156 professionals with the
participating amateur contingent also losing some 30 spots. Poppy Hills is
out of the rotation now inserting the old favorite - Monterey Peninsula C.C.
back into the rotation to complement the Pebble Beach and Spyglass Hill golf
courses.
There have been some great champions in AT & T National Pro Am past a
storied list that includes Sam Snead, Ben Hogan, Byron Nelson, Lloyd Mangrum,
Tom Watson, Johnny Miller, Jack Nicklaus, Davis Love, Vijay Singh, Phil
Mickelson, and Tiger Woods. Steve Lowery won the tournament in 2008 with
Dustin Johnson defending here after winning last year in 2009.
